. . . I have been severely bitten by a travel bug! A visit to Chez Pim this morning just moved one of my favorite fantasy vacation spots into first place. Spain's Basque country has always tempted me -- mountains, rugged coastline, great food and a great museum, what could go wrong? -- but now I have two specific, must-go restaurant recommendations from Pim: Extebarri and Elkano. These two places sound to me like food nirvana. Read and drool. Must go, must go, must go.
Other places on my list: Galicia (a subset or extension of the above, further inspired by a couple of road-shots in the last Almodovar film); Normandy (further inspired by tasting and selling Eric Bordelet's brilliant Cidres -- I want to see that 300 year old pear tree!); and Corsica (but only if I can find the ideal travelling companion to drive me around on a motorcycle: ie man enough to know how to drive a motorcycle but mature enough to not try and kill me; I've been over the whole living on the edge thing since birth. But I hear it's the only way to see the island).
So many trips, so few vacation days! But I'm vowing right now that next year (assuming, I hope rightly, that it will be less, um, complicated than this one was) will include more travels. And I fully admit that, yes, I would go all the way to San Sebastian just to go to a fish restaurant. (Or Normandy to see a pear tree. Or Galicia to eat pulpo.) And I have lots of air miles to use!
Enjoying local food is part of the experience of traveling. The more adventurous traveler can opt to try exotic food, while the more conservative ones can stick to the food they are familiar with.
